The name Lapis lazuli  means "blue rock" a deep-blue metamorphic rock used as a precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense color. The sumerians believed that lapis lazuli contained the spirit of the deities; the ancient egyptians also regarded it as the stone of the gods.
